Opening days: Every day of the year except Christmas day and New Years day when the horses and we take a much needed break.

Times: Our overnight rides vary, depending which route you book.

The shorter rides normally go out twice a day at 9:30 and 3:00 in summer and 10:00 and 2:00 in winter. We are flexible on our times outside of our busy times of year.

How to book: Please e-mail us at blackhorsetrails@yahoo.com or phone us on (+27) 82 494 5642 or (+27) 78 565 3155, (+27) 72 137 4538

If you are not able to reach us because we are on a ride, please feel free to SMS or whats app us.

What info we need when you book:

  • Please let us know you levels of riding experience (Beginner, intermediate or experienced)
  • Your age
  • Your weight (Max 100kg)

We can take groups of up to 11 people, if 5 are experienced.

Our farm is situated above the Wilderness and at the foot of the majestic Outeniqua mountains. Our rides venture into the cool damp of the mystical indigenous forests in the Wilderness National Parks where the bird and animal life is abundant. The Knysna lourie, many species of raptors, monkeys, baboons and bush buck are commonly sighted on our trails along with the more elusive bush pigs and snakes who occasionally surprise us with a flash appearance. Our longer rides offer beautiful views over the mountain and farmlands.

We try to match riders with an equal amount of riding experience as to lessen the pressure for those to go at a pace one might not be comfortable with, whether too fast or too slow. Although this is often tricky as the groups that arrive have mixed levels within their group. Most of the time we can take a second or third guide so we can split the group in the canter areas. In our busy times over Christmas and Easter it is very tricky to give everyone the ride they prefer so we ask for some patience from you. We don’t mind taking out loan cowboys or cowgirls so feel free to book even if it is just you.

RIDING OPTIONS:

We are creating almost weekly new rides and options, so feel free to ask us what else we have available.

7km Meadow View R500.-pp

A lovely ride for all that want to try out riding. From our farm we venture into a private property along the lush, grassy meadows. We will have the occasional trot, but all nice and easy and work our way back to the farm.

Note: if you don’t feel like trotting or even need one of us to walk next to you, we will make the distance shorter, but still charge the same price and take as long as the guys that would trot, we call it Family Trail

9km Meadow View R650.-pp

Lovely ride to do some trotting and even cantering if your experience allows. Possibly our most popular trail at the moment. From our farm we venture into a private property along the lush, grassy meadows, along a little stream, through some indigenous and other forest.

11km Rockpool Ride R950.-pp plus R235.-pp permit fees

This is a stunning ride in summer, taking you from our farm along the very bottom of the Outeniqua Mountain, to the Diepriver Rockpools in the Indigenous Forest (part of the Wilderness National Park). We take a little break at the pools, you are welcome to bring your swimming gear along and have a refreshing dip in the river. This ride is for all levels, as you can do it in just a walk (break will be shorter), or enjoy loveley trots and canters as well (longer break, then).

The next rides are not available 15th Dec – 15th Jan.

These following rides need permits, so an additional R195pp is needed.

11km Mountain Trail R950.-pp + permit

Amazing trail for the slightly more adventurous person, with great opportunities for long trots and canters. Brilliant views over the farm lands, to the ocean and onto our famous Outeniqua Mountain.

20km Lancewood Ride R1500.-pp + permit

Views, views and more views. If you are looking for a fun ride that will free your heart and let you feel the wind blow thorough your horses ears, then this is the right one for you. Overlooking farm lands, the mountain, the ocean, lakes and dams, you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy wild and bird life and trot and canter until you are breathless and smiling.

3 Day Coast to Karoo (100km)

Our absolute FAVORITE!!!

This ride is for the hardcore rider

MUST BE A GROUP OF AT LEAST 2 PEOPLE, PLANNED AT LEAST 2 WEEK AHEAD.

RIDERS MUST NOT EXCEED 85KG.

DAY 1 (ABOUT 5.5 HOURS RIDING. WE COVER ABOUT 30KM) We will leave in the morning from our ranch and ride to our first break at the river. After a snack we will ride a bit higher up into the Outeniqua mountains, through hilly terrain. Only the first 2 hours are with

a lot of trotting and cantering, after that the mountain becomes too steep and the ground too rocky. We will climb up all the way and start crossing over to the Karoo along the very historical Oxwagon Trail (before that, this pass was used by the Khois)

I am very sure that both, you and the horses, will enjoy landing at the farm that will be our overnighting spot. Before you retire in the late afternoon, don’t forget that your horses need to be cared for by you.

A car will bring your overnight stuff and the accomodation crew will welcome you warmly.

DAY 2 (A BIT MORE FLEXIBLE) First and foremost, we will feed our horses and then have breakfast ourselves. From here we can decide. Previous clients enjoyed the riding time split into 2 different rides of 2 times 20km (depending on the time of the year, the second ride could take us to a neighbouring wine farm for wine testing). Other riders enjoy a full 40km ride and then nuture their bodies at the pool, swim with the horses in the dam, or go for a guided walk to the Khoi Cave and admire the historical paintings. Don’t worry, a light snack and cooldrink break is taken into account. Don’t forget to make sure

that your horse is fed and settled for the evening.

DAY 3 (30km, usually done in about 4 – 4.5 hoursAfter feeding our trustworthy and deserving steeds, we head out again towards and over the Oxwagon trail and then take a slightly route back. The way home is less steep (some slight downhill trotting done), the horses are anxious and happy to meet up with the rest of their buddies at home. We often then put a bitted bridle on and maybe even a martingale.

Included are light snacks and cooldrinks that can fit in our saddle bags. For your family members that don’t ride, our overnight accommodation can sleep many people, so they are welcome to book in as well and can go cycling, hiking, swimming ect while we ride.
